Engine Management Light

The engine management light has appeared on the dash of my 02 d4d avensis, 110,000 miles. A diagnostic check with Toyota dealer gave fault code 78/8 fuel pump malfunction and was advised by them to replace the common rail at a price of £700! Any suggestions to avoid this cost would be appreciated.

i didnt get a message..

But you can clean the SCV out once to see if they are the problems.

Hi,

I couldn't find any topics in relation to the SCV. Could you possibly repeat the details so I could give it a try. The car starts okay and cruises relatively fine. Any form of acceleration and nothing happens until you back off on the throttle and feather it again were the speed builds gradually. The engine management light does not come on straight away but does stay on permanently after about 15 minutes running. Sorry about this but any details about cleaning the SCV you have would be much appreciated

tools needed.

Alan keys

Alan Key wrench

WD40

A spanner and rachet set

brake / Car cleaner

a flat screw driver and a small crow bar

a small water tight bag - like a sandwich bag

1 open up bonnet

2 look at the radiator overflow

3 undo the 10mm nuts

4 turn the overflow box upside down to oneside

5 Remove engine cover

6 Undo loom 10 mm nut mounted directley infront of the radiator overflow container

7 look inbetween the engine block and the radiator

8 to the right you will see the stater motor,

9 to the left you will see an round connector (3 Pin)

10 Look futher to the left and you will see the SCV. they are GREEN and RED (2 Pin connectors)

11 Undo the 2 connectors

12 you will see the two SCV held in by 2 small alan nuts. (becareful)

13 Undo these nuts, the SCV will require help to remove them from the pump

14 Inspect the Control valves,

15 Spray carb cleaner/ brake cleaner onto the SCV.

16 Spray some of the carb/ brake cleaner into the bag (enough so when you put the control valve in it is submerged.

17 Put the control valve in the bag - SHAKE - SHAKE - Keep shaking ;) for afew mins (do the same to the other control valve.

18 once out of the bag, spray with carb cleaner and then blow through with a compressor (to dry) or use your breath. *do the same to the other control valve.

19 now in reverse order, put the control valves in and tighten the nuts up

20 Dont put the engine cover on yet

21 connect the control valve wires.

22 Find the Primer Pump (fuel)

23 if you dont know where it is, look at the Battery at the right, above that is the airbox. Above the airbox is the spring strutt, and above that is like a can that has a small black button on. Press the button in untill it goes hard.

24 stick the key in and start.

If you havent replaced the FUEL filter now is a the chance.

Could you take a picture of the control valves please. and post it here.

I just wanted to say....

The bolts on the control valve a TINY. Becareful whilst you remove them. The last thing you want is to overtighten, or snap the screw heads. Make sure you also put the alan nuts or Alan keys all the way in.

Thanks for that. Last few days the engine management light has gone off and normal power has returned? Do you think it was a bad batch of fuel or could the SCV valve could have become 'unstuck'?

The SCV dont really become unstuck. They are a part of the pump which pressuries the fuel Rail. Bad fuel, or dirty fuel can clogg them up causing MAJOR performance issues.

what kind of fuel do u use?

what brand ?

Mainly from the likes of Asda and Tesco. Don't want to tempt fate but it seems to be okay at moment, touch wood, and it was just a thought about the fuel? The wife said she did fill up at a Total station once in the middle of nowhere, maybe just coincidence? All your advice much appreciated. Thanks

everytime i have had trouble with the scv. - its the type of fuel.

Mix and Match no good.

Stick to one brand :)
