Idle Speed When Cold

I have had my Avensis just over 2 weeks now, and it’s a pig when it is cold, (first thing on a morning cold)

It idles at 1,800 rpm so that when I get to the end of our street and apply the brakes, which obviously slows down the revs, the ECU wants to keep 1,800 revs and turns the throttle up causing it to lurch and fights the brakes. The local Toyota dealer say this is normal rpm when cold, why so high? As soon as it warms up there is no problem

Yup, it's normal. Don't fight it with the brakes, change down or dip the clutch as you get too slow for the rpm's.

P.S. Unless of course you're an auto, then your stuffed.

Think it's a pretty common cold idle on Toyota engines, depending on the outside temperature. If you go downhill and don't use the breaks it should decrease, to obtain engine breaking, going up again if you apply the break or the clutch

Thanks all for your reply, this would seem normal but my local dealer has now screwed me by telling me he may have fixed it by cleaning the throttle body and reset the ECU. He also says that if it persists that I may need another ECU. I asked him why as I have only 72,000km (45,000 mile)I shall not be returning to this dealer anymore.

it looks like this dealer is short of clients and they try to earn money from you to be afloat :)
