Benefits Of A "big Wing" Sump

Ive heard of a dry sump system, where the engine oil is contained in a separate container and not the sump . but what is a "big wing sump" and what are the potential benefits...... is it just simply increased oil capacity?

generally it's just for increased capacity, in actual fact it puts less strain on an oil cooler as the incrased capacity means it'll take longer to over heat under 'track conditions', this also means your engine should be protected more under the same conditions for the same reasons.

you normally only see them on cars that suffer oil starvation under track conditions such as Nissan SX's and skylines. this is partially due to the direction the engine is mounted aswell.

cool, thought it must be something like that. do you by any chance know if there is any difference in the bottom end between the 165, 185 and 205 ive got a chance to pik up a few goodies cheap  and this is one of them. it came from a 185 and would be going onto my 205. cheers

Both those sumps will only fit a ST165 & ST185. The ST205 has a 2 piece sump, the upper half is ally and the lower pan is steel.
