1.8 Gls Not Starting When Cold

To be quick.

The car is not starting when the ambiant temperature is below about 6 degrees .

If it does it really struggles and runs like a dog until it warms up a bit. The warmer it gets the better it runs and once up to full temperature it runs fine.

Seems to also not want to start when up to normal temp and you stop the engine then try to restart with a short delay but then starts OK again when it's cooled down for a very short period (a minute or so) then runs ok.

Fuel consumption is a little high but that's due to the way the car is used (short trips mostly as my wife runs to and from school and work).

I will probably be booking her (the car not the wife :) )in to one of the local garages for a diagnosis but in the mean time (need the car running this weekend) does anyone have any ideas what is happening here.

It has started this evening and run but with the symptoms above.
