Strange Howl/whine

Hi, just got back from 6 days away and the Rav4 a 112k mile 2002 D4d by the way performed faultlessly, however has developed a howl/whine which rises and falls slower than engine speed, not especially loud either.

Thought it may be a belt that got contaminated and was slipping, it doesn't seem to be. The only other things I can think of are an air leak somewhere or the turbo on the way out?

Any suggestions/opinions/insults welcomed!

Regards Dave

Any chance of posting a video (or youtube) clip?

aha - I see you took my insults to heart! Now we have a tea-drinking driver with both red and blue RAVs - well done ancs!!! Next time, you'll need to try for a green RAV (do they make them in green??).

street-moto - welcoming insults   where do I start?

First, have you checked the serpentine belt isn't making the noise? This can be discounted by pouring boiling hot water over the engine whilst travelling at 57mph in 2nd gear - you may need to ask wan o yer family tae help.

Second - where did you travel to, and do you remember driving over a sleeping policeman?

Thirdly, did you remember to unhook that person in their wheelchair from the rear bumper? Mind the one that was crossing the road when you were reversing?

Forthlee, did you try spraying WD40 type stuff all over the engine? If not, then don't. If you did, then thats the reason.

Lastly, if you're still around, get that chest infection checked out pronto by the GP.

PS - if the turbo is on its way out, I'd phone the police to catch the guy thats taking it.

Thanks for the replies, I think!

Anchorman, I'll try and post a clip up, ain't the belts, pretty sure about that. Can only hear it at low revs, not at idle. Basically a "oooooooeeee" sound as the revs rise and reverse as the revs fall.

Touch wood the car's starting fine and running great, just annoying more than anything else.

BTW it ain't the fuel pump noise I'm confusing it with, got that as well, used to that one!

Anyone had a turbo break, what were symptoms?

I sometimes get this type of noise, comes and goes, seems more noticable when cold. I think is a bearing somewhere. Im pretty sure its coming from the power steering pump, or one of the ancilleries connected to the serp belt.

Well folks, thanks for the interest, took the car in to the local independant and asked him if he could spare a few minutes just to listen and advise as to what could be the problem. He was busy but good enough he had a listen, then got his stethoscope type thing out and pronounced it to probably be the power steering tensioner pulley bearing, not a big job and not urgent. Thank goodness for that!

Good news then

Probably replacing sooner than later as if it goes you could lose the steering or worse. Might be worthwhile changing the PS fluid at the same time, looks a bit black to me
