Engine Running Poorly In Carina E

Recommended Posts

Posted

Hi folks, hopefully somebody can assist me with a running problem in my 1997 Carina E 1587CC.

Acceleration can be rather hesitant and jerky at times. When accelerating from 60mph to 80mph for example it would seem as if the engine did not want to accelerate at first and then there would be a small bit of a burst of acceleration. Also the car idles at different revs. For example if stopped at traffic lights the car might tick over at over 1,000 rpm, then blip the throttle and it may settle down to circa 600rpm....all when the engine is at normal operating temperature. Oil, filter and plugs were changed pretty recently.

Part of me thinks it may be the ignition coil as one went in my cousins vectra and it displayed somewhat similar symptoms. All the same I don't want to go changing parts to eliminate them and end up with and expensive repair bill in doing so. Could anybody point me in the right direction please. Any assistance is very much appreciated.

Hi

I got exactly the same problem on exactly the same car I recently bought.

Are you noticing a strong smell of petrol, especially around the nearside rear wheel arch?

Am just about to go investigate this as a potential cause as the last MOT returned advisory notices on corroded fuel lines & economy is not great.

Will let you know how I get on.

Check the plug leads, you might have a broken lead, it sounds like it's missing.

Right could be the injectors, as I had a similar prob but more of a misfire when accelerating sometimes along with rough idle speeds. The injectors are renowed for giving problems on the E's with over 150,000 miles.

There is a fuel filter on them by the way at the bulkhead but if you are changing it the pipes are really tight so use a pipe spanner and correctly fitting larger spanner for casing. Might be worth a try to change it after you have put in an injector cleaning fuild to flush out any **** that might be in the injectors or in the system.
