Transfer Case/diff Oil Advice

Hi Folks,

I'm hoping to get some advice on buying transfer case/diff oil for my 2002 Petrol (VVTi/1998cc) Rav4. I'm probably going to buy a batch of engine/gearbox oil for an up-coming service from Opie Oils, and I went through their Oil Recommender Wizard for my model.

I noticed all their Transfer Case/Diff Oil choices came back as the same as for the Manual Transmission oil (i.e. 75W-90). However the Toyota specs sheet (and my hayes manual) recommends SAE 90 or 85W-90 for the transfer case and just SAE 90 for the Rear diff? I'm worried that the 75W-90 that Opie Oil's is recommending is not the best viscosity?

Also Toyota advised (at the last service) that there was evidence of a very small amount of oil seeping from the rear of the "Front Diff Tailshaft Seal" (Toyota's words not mine!). Has anybody tried replacing this seal themselves?

Any thoughts on the above most appreciated!

Cheers,

Graham

I think I've found an indirect answer to my question here:

Looks like the stuff Opie recommends is suitable based on this comment in the product description:

"It is suitable for all units requiring a gear oil of SAE 75W, 80W or 90; including multigrade formulations within this range, e.g. 75W/90, 80W/90 and 85W/90.

API GL3, 4, 5".

Still interested to hear from anyone that might have completed the seal replacement I mentioned above.

Cheers,

Graham
