2002 2.0 Vvti Petrol - Low Idle And 2000-3000Rpm Stutter

Hi there. I recently purchased a 2002/02 Avensis 2.0 VVTI GLS estate with just under 126,000 miles on the clock.

I've had the car nearly a week and done approximately 400 miles in it. I noticed that every so often, at between 2000 and 3000rpm on a steady throttle in 3rd, 4th or 5th (so when cruising at between 40-60mph) it jerks like there is a misfire or not enough fuel getting through. The warm idle speed was also very low, around 400 to 500rpm.

As the car stalled a couple of times when warm on Friday I did some research on the forum and noted that member "B3rtie" had some success in cleaning out his throttle body. Unfortunately the Haynes manual is no real help, and I can't seem to find a factory workshop CD-ROM for the T22 model, so I removed the air hose between the air cleaner housing and the throttle butterfly housing and undid four 10mm bolts on the housing. However, I couldn't remove it, so ended up trying to clean it out with a can of carb cleaner in situ. Is there a way of removing it so I can clean it more easily?

Cleaning it up appears to have helped the idle speed a little (it now idles at around 650rpm) but the "stutter" is still there, and quite annoying! I have ordered a full, genuine Toyota service kit (oil filter, air filter, fuel filter and Iridium plugs) but haven't checked the plugs that are currently in there.

The engine light has come on a couple of times since I have had the car, usually about 15 minutes into a drive, but does not come on again when the engine is restarted. I have a code reader on order so will investigate.

The car doesn't seem to be using any oil or water and otherwise runs very well (although there doesn't seem to be a lot of "go" below 3000rpm - characteristic of this engine, perhaps?), so I'd be grateful for any pointers.

Thanks

Richard

First off, I must agree with you that the torque on low revs could be better.

I have also noticed a stutter. But it only happens when the engine is cold just as it is

beginning to warm up, and only once. I always thought that it is the engine switching program or something,

like going from "choke" to "normal".

As far as idle speed concerns, I just tweaked the accelerator pedal to give just a little

more revs, at the same time the lag disappeared from the pedal, making it harder for the

car to die on me, when driving away.
