Clutch Pedal Clicking

Hi just bought a Rav4 D4D '03 reg VX and am pretty happy with the purchase. Been looking around for a few months so haven't rushed in. It's been well looked after, 62k miles, FDSH, and just had the DMF replaced last year.

Anyhow I did notice that when the clutch pedal is released fully there is a slight knocking/clicking noise coming from the clutch pedal area. It's not particularly noisy but once you hear a noise it tends to become more prominent in your mind and then you tend to notice all the time. I have just sold a Lexus IS200 (my partners actually) and this did exactly the same.

Basically there is an adjuster on the pedal stop that can alter the freeplay of the clutch pedal, mainly to compensate wear of the pins.

All you have to do is slacken the locknut then screw the adjuster in till the freeplay is taken up and the noise will disappear

It's probably a bit anal, but i do like to keep my vehicles right, so if anyone else has the same problem, it's an easy fix

Cheers for this simple tip - it'll save others getting into a panic!

Welcome, Mach 1, to the Madhoose. Brilliant to see somebody's first post is actually A FIX rather than a PROBLEM. If ever I get a Clicky Clutch, I will know how to sort and raise a glass to all in Pink Panther County !!!

Regards,

Big Kev

Thanks for welcome Kev

I like hi-fi aswell, only wish i'd looked after my vinyl when I was younger. I do have a Rega Planar 2 but tend to listen to music on my MF Nu-vista CDP. Vinyl has a certain warmth about it that cd's (especially newer, badly produced ones)can't match. One of the best sounding hi-fi's I have heard had a Linn Sondek as the source, lovely

Good info. However, its important to remember there are "two sorts" of free play in the clutch pedal. It is fine to adjust out the very loose free play before the pedal does anything but by pressing the clutch pedal with the finger ends it should be possible to feel a "springy" fee play which is in the clutch itself. This is the release bearing clearance and without it the bearing will be in constant contact with the pressure plate and that will cause premature failure. The only way it can be changed is with the rather large task of removing the gearbox. So loose and floppy freeplay can be adjusted but the the springy 20mm or so must not!

Good point well made....I was one of those company car drivers who sorta rested his foot on the clutch, and took up this freeplay, only to wonder what that premature rattle and scrunching into gears was !!!!

Thanks to the Pink Photo Person.....

You're right Anchorman, I should have explained things a little more in depth. It is only freeplay on the clutch pedal I was referring to, not clutch pedal preload.

TBH though, as far as I was aware, as long as you don't go too far and block the fluid return orifice, then the clutch bearing should find it's own position on the fingers (the two touch but shouldn't be preloaded).

I believe that's right

They do on some - like a disc pad stays close to a disc but on the RAV there is a setting for freeplay. I will dig it out and attach it.
