Major Knocking Noise And Oil Leak.

2001 1.8 Avensis GS VVTi 16v

I put my car into the garage a week and a half ago after it developed a pneumatic drill type knocking sound from the engine. The oil had just been topped up but the oil light stayed on. The AA said they thought it sounded like the tappits so I put the car into my mechanic for him to strip down the engine and find out what the problem is.

Anyway here I am a week and a half later and my mechanic says he cant take apart the engine cos he doesn't have the right tools to reset something in the engine when putting it back together so I went and picked up the car and drove it back to near where I live to sit outside another garage for it opening tomorrow morning only I don't get that far because there is a deep bang and the engine starts to really vibrate so I pull over and there is a stretch of oil down the road behind me. So my car is parked two streets away from the garage (just my luck BTW) and I'm thinking a new engine is in order.

Thoughts anyone .......

Sounds like it may have 'thrown a leg out of bed'. If it has, the engines wrecked.

Yep, almost certainly a thrown rod (con-rod moving at high speed within the engine has made a bid for freedom and smashed through the block)

That'll be the engine being a write off.

Sounds like the big end bearings had gone (causing the original knocking noise)and eventually lead to the blow up. Not too impressed by the AA or the original garage. Big end knocking is fairly easy to identify and differentiate from tappits. Dunno what the original garage was talking about either since I can't think of any special tools needed to reset anything (only thing I can think of that needs resetting out of the engine is the chain tensioner and that can be done by hand)

If it makes you feel any better though the engine was pretty terminal when you heard the original knocking
