2000 Avensis Over-Revs - Loss Of Power

Hoping someone can offer a suggestion:

I have a 2000 Avensis GS estate, high mileage (170k) and I suspect it was a taxi in a former life.

Recently I've noticed a loss of drive when you accelerate, the rev counter skips from say 2-3000 revs before dropping back down to where it should be. There is a loss of power and the engine seems to "reconnect" as the revs return to normal. This is most noticeable when the engine has warmed up and you are in 4th/5th gear. From browsing the forums I was stuck at either a clutch problem (doesn't appear to be - seems fine off the mark, can stall it trying to start in 2nd or 3rd) or possibly the flywheel? Didn't know if this was a common problem in older models, thought I'd get some opinion before trying to find a local mechanic. Just took it up country for an 800 mile mission and she didn't let me down, but I feel the need to nurse it a little at the moment.

Any help would be much appreciated!

Mat

Sounds very much like clutch slip to me, slip will always occur in higher gears first and extend to lower gears as it gets worse. With 170k on the clock, it seems extremely likely.

Thanks for the suggestion - I'll get it looked at. Still hoping it doesn't get too expensive! The last service they jacked up the extras to over £500 (to answer your question CMLA I haven't touched it personally - but full service included all the usual about 6 months ago)

Cheers for your time guys
