Best Oil For The 1.8 Consumption Problem?

I've seen a few threads started on oil consumption for the 1.8VVTI.

Advantages 10w40 versus 5w30- which is best to use then?

Ok, which one is thicker? I assume the 5w30 is thicker?

Whats best for reducing oil consumption- thicker oil so it can't get passed the O-rings?

10w40 is better for cold morning starts as its thinner gets round the engine quicker?

As a general rule 10-40W oil will be thicker than 5-30W. So the thinner oil will circulate that bit quicker in cold conditions.

But with modern synthetic oils the rules vary quite a bit so you may not see much variation in oil consumption.

What most people tend to forget is that oil is not just there for lubrication but also the vital role of cooling internal engine components so a thinner oil may will have higher flow rate thus increased cooling.:)

As Jamesbelfast says, 10/40 is thicker than 5/30. 10/40 acts like a 10 grade oil when cold and as a 40 grade when hot, 5/30 acts as a 5 grade when cold and as a 30 grade when hot. The higher the number, the thicker the oil.

The oil burning problems occur when the oil scraper rings (AKA oil control rings) don't remove enough oil film from the cylinder bores, the excess oil ends up on top of the piston and is then burnt during the combustion stroke.

Can't see it making a great deal of difference but I would say the 10/40 would be slightly better.

use the thicker oil.

Sure?

I would use 10w-30 not 10w-40 in place of the 5w-30 oil, if an engine originally factory-filled with 5W-30 now has high miles on it, switching to a 10W-30 oil should provide better lubrication and protection. The thicker oil will maintain the strength of the oil film in the bearings better so the engine will have more oil pressure also 10w-40 breaks down too quickly and does not stay in grade as long as 10W-30 or 5W-30 according to the experts.

It's all a matter of opinion but that's my view and always go with what the engine manufacturer recommends as they usually know better,

regards Pete.
