Strange Rattle But Not The Dash?

There's an annoying rattle that seems to come from the left hand side (engine bay) and does not appear to be the dash rattle as mentioned on this site. it mainly happens when cold or around 2k revs in 1st & 2nd gear. i know the earlier AVENSIS had an issue with the baffle on the intake manifold, just wondering if the yaris had similar probs.

 Could be the timing chain. Have you changed the oil recently? or does it need changing?

It was serviced and stamped the day before we collected it (Apparently)

How often do the timing chain tensioners have to be replaced? its only done 44,300miles with full toyota service appart from the last one done a week ago.

Just to clarify:

can it be heard from inside the cabin?

can you hear it from the engine bay/outside the car?

the left of the engine bay looking at the bay, or from driving position?

what type of rattle is it? metal/plastic/high pitched...etc.

maybe a loose exhaust heatshield?

Its an odd one, yes it can be heard from inside the car (thats how i picked it up) but it dont seem to do it when you just rev the engine, its more noticable when you move off then 2nd and 3rd (When underload) The heat shield theory sounds good but does the 2SZ engine have one? (cars garaged so will check 2moz) it does sound like a metallic vibration.

Timing chains are checked every 100,000 miles i think so your's is quite a way off.

I asked about the oil as my sr had a slight rattle when it needed an oil change, i put it down to the old oil not being good enough to lube the chain and hence rattle similar to the one's you sometimes get on motorcycles.

I would imagine it to be a loose heatshield as mentioned though, have a look underneath to check it.

Not sure if your's has a shield over the manifold aswell, but if it does check that too. ;)

Checked this morning and no heat sheild, Oil is at correct level and clean, No vibration on start up or reving upto 3k..........Soon as we went out and set off/1st/2nd/3rd you could hear the noise, Its only for a second or two but annoying all the same. Might take it back and have the garage we bought it off take a look as it came with a 12mth warranty.

2k revs is c maximum torque. Maybe you have an engine mounting or gearbox mounting failing? Or the exhaust moving a bit on its mountings and fouling something?
