Hi guys...

A follow on.....(re my 2001 51 Sr 1.8vvti 86500k)

My engine light came on again the other day...so as i've done before i pulled the EFI fuse again for a second and it went off...see i work a couple of miles down the road and thats all i use my car for...but its when i do a slightly longer run...say a 5/10 minute drive that i find it comes on! Anyway i made friends with a local mechanic (he used to work for BMW)and he offered to do a diagnostic check for free...but he couldn't find any faults at all...he said its because i pulled the EFI fuse its cleared the ECU memory! Anyway he said to come back when the light comes back on after which he can check it again and see which lambda sensor is faulty. I told him how i have a high fuel consumption problem (£50 full tank i get 150miles approx) and so he knelt down with the engine running and smelt at the exhaust and said its definitley burning rich as he could smell petrol. What do you guys think? Please help.

p.s...Also im getting like a squeaky sound which i think is coming from the belt (think i only have 1 big belt looking at it now)that makes the sound at low revs say from 1st to 2nd gear...any ideas why?

Hi Sammy,

with all due respects and having read your past postings i would really consider buying a smaller engined motor if you like toyata's i think a yaris or something like would suit your style better. The avensis you have is not really getting the use it needs a few miles to work and back is not really getting your vehicle to a working temp hence the high fuel consumption regardless of it running rich and i ask myself was the choke off when the guy knelt to smell the exhaust if not he would have smelt a rich mixture, i do not wish any offence in this post but i think i would really consider checking out a smaller vehicle for your needs, £50 for 150 miles thats clearly an overspend on fuel in my mind, maybe you are smitten by the looks of your avensis and not looking at other aspects of running cost ect.

None offence taken mate...although its nearly one straight! Your right...i did fall for its looks and amazing condition when i bought it...i honestly did think it would be worth running as it being a newer car would be more economical! If i take your advice...hmmm...always liked a yaris T sport...thanks anyway!

Hi Sam,

Well from your previous post for Sensor problems there was no mention of the unbelievable 16-17 mpg you say you are getting. £50=150miles.

There is obviously something very wrong somewhere - just surprised your 'mechanic friend' just stopped there if he knew how much it was burning fuel and could smell it is the tail pipe - why did he not check it out further ??

Cannot remember all your previous posts but surely any good mechanic / technician on a tuning / diagnostic machine could soon isolate the problem with the so many obvious faults you have, eg fuel consumption, sensor errors, noises.

Believe Toyota charge about £75 for a hour on there machine - compared to the price of petrol you are paying for thats small change.

Sure there must also be some other good tuners in a city as big as yours.

How about sparkplugs and ingntion cables? Are they newly replaced? Could be a cause to inefficient combustion, resulting in high comsumption and lack of power as well as noise.
