Auris Idling & Engine Noise

Hi everyone, have had my Auris for about 2 weeks now (2.0 D-4D) and have a couple of questions I hope someone can help out on:

1. I have started noticing the engine seems noisey and rougher now, esp when cold. I see some earlier topics comment on the same issue. One suggests different fuel in tank affects this, another suggest ECU remapping to help solve this. Any tips?

2. Idling when warm is not always a constant purrrr. There seems to be slight inconsistency in the idle but not enough to make the needle move much. Even a mate in the car commented on it so its not just me. Anyone else had a similar issue? Also sounds like an AC or Alternator bearing is making a bit of noise.

3. Do you always let the engine idle after a drive? Reading the book says you should (diesel turbo), but Toyota dealer didnt mention it at all (bought used, 07 model)

Thanks!

1. It's a Diesel :) It will be rattly from cold. The car is a 2007 and you have had it 2 weeks, so it's unlikely to have changed in that time.

2. It's notoriously difficult to describe noises... if you suspect a problem get an opinion from Toyota dealer. Is it still under warranty ? Does the noise diminish if you depress the clutch ? in which case it's probably nothing at all to worry about.

3. You should always idle the engine at least for a few seconds to let the turbo spin down, if you have been driving fast and just pulled up allow at least 30 seconds or so. Not doing so stops the oil flow to the still spinning (and red hot) turbo bearings allowing the remaining oil there to carbonise with consequent wear to the bearings.

The user manual for the current "facelifted" Auris mentions this somewhere, with the appropriate advice and times to allow, so I'm guessing the 2007 one does too.

Problems involving noises are notoriously difficult to diagnose over the internet, something to do with not being able to hear them methinks  IMO if the engine noise has changed since you bought the car, and the idle has become uneven, a trip back to the dealer for an explanation is in order. If unsatisfied with the answer get a second opinion from an independent source. You usually really have to be able to hear engine noises to form an opinion .... don't let that stop you from asking about them though

Think with modern synthitic oils it's not really so important to keep the engine idling for a while after normal use, particiularly with diesels which usually run cooler than petrol, though if the user manual says do it then do it. I'd always do it after using the car at high speed/high rpm to let the turbo spool down and keep the oil supply going while its doing it. IMO its probably not a good idea to indulge in throttle blipping immediately before shutdown if its got a turbo
