Hi all,

Did an oil change on both my cars at the weekend:

2005 1.6 Petrol Avensis.

2008 2.0 D4D TR Avensis.

Got all part in my Main Toyota dealer, but i wanna check something with ye guys if I may.

They gave me the same oil for both cars even though one is petrol and the other is diesel ( Toyota Branded 10 w40) is this ok?

Mr T must think so. Read this thread :-

a similar discussion took place there, my reply is in there (which I still stand by) along with others, you will have to decide. It may help or may just add more confusion.

Yes the Toyota branded oil will go into petrol OR diesel models. If you buy an oil that says FOR DIESEL then it should'nt be put in a petrol engine. Hope that makes sense

I would normally supply 5w 30 but 10w 40 will do

Kingo

All automotive oils I have seen for sale meet both petrol and diesel specs despite what marketing has been put on the tin, so yes same oil for both these days. There are exceptions though and these lie with the diesels fitted with DPF's, they require a special oil but these oils also meet Petrol specs so suitable for petrols.

However on a 2005 and a 2008 model I would expect a dealer to supply/recommend you with 5w-30.

Cheers

Guy.

  • 2 weeks later...

i just did oil change yesterday and 2004 d4d has done 82300 miles so opted for slightly thicker 10w40 instead of 5w30 as per book used comma semi synthetic bought from local motor factors with fram oil filter and wynns engine flush and changed gbox oil with recomended 75w90 only cost 50 quid and 2.5 hours on a nice day and runs smoother now. only used slightly thicker due to mileage of car.
