Can I Adjust The Belt Rollers Myself? (How)

Before I bought my Avensis the belt on the alternator etc was squealing so the prev owner had a new belt fitted. Its now making noisy 'roller-noises' (from the rollers at that side is the best way of describing it). I think the tension on the rollers need backing off a bit? (The belts on too tight?)

Is there a way I can do myself? I have a socket and wrench set. Any pictorials or descriptions gratefully received!

maybe depending on year of avensis mines a 2004 model d4d and the alternator roller is automatically tensioned by spring and the auxillary belt is manual the alternator is best got at underneath the engine bay and is only a short belt at the back of the engine. the aux is on the top front of the engine you need to slacken the middle of the roller bolt where you see the tensioner only then can you adjust the belt tension sorry i havent got any pics hope this helps.

You need to be careful. The bearings might well be damaged due to the belts being overtensioned. I had a similar issue on my own car. Its very easy to overtighten the multitooth belts. Slacken it off and spin the roller tensioner by hand and see what happens. If its noisy or feels rough it might be a good idea to replace the tensioner as a bearing failure can cause major problems if it lets go. I have seen cases where belts have come off and wrecked the timing belt cover then taken out the actual timing belt itself.
