More Trouble With Remote Locking/key

Hi, I have a 1998 avensis 1.8 GLS. Today I went to the car and nothing happened when I tried to unlock with the remote button on the key. I tried a few times but definitely nothing. I unlocked the door with the key and the alarm went off, so I tried the lock button to see if it would switch it off and it did. So, I can arm the alarm and lock the car but I cant unlock the car or disarm the alarm remotely.

Another issue I have had this week, which I dont know if its related, is that the drivers window plays up on closing. When I hit the button once to do a full close, it closes fully then drops half way and I have to keep trying many times before it finally closes and stays.

The interior light also does not work with the door open option.

I am lost without my car!! HELP!!! I have changed the batteries in the key but nothing changed. I have contacted Toyota and they said its £140 for a new key, plus the programming but is it the key!! I am going there in the morning but I dont really want to waste £140 plus on a key if it could be something else.

All my cars documents were stolen in a burglary along with the spare key, so I have no literature to refer to.. I'm compeletely flumoxed! Please help x

Avensis keys can be repaired at:

Automobile Locksmith Supply Company

Unit 5 Road End Farm Yard

Great Casterton

Tollbar

Stamford

Lincolnshire

PE9 4BB

United Kingdom

It costs £25 takes 2 days but work is guaranteed or no charge.

See advert on eBay.

If the interior light works in the always on option the trouble is almost certainly the door switch, check this by trying the passenger door. If it is the switch that's not making a circuit try pushing/pulling/twisting it with your fingers(fairly gently of course you wouldn't want to break it would you?). It's on the forward door pillar inside a small rubber cover.

I have exactly the same problem with my window I'll be interested to see any suggestions you receive.

Hi Again.

There appears to be lots of 2 button Toyota key fobs on eBay for less than £10.

You can remove the electronics and put into your key. For reprogramming either somehow you'll have to get to the dealer or try

1. The vehicle should be in the following condition:

A. The key is NOT inserted in the ignition.

B. The driver's door is open.

C. The driver’s door is UNLOCKED.

2. Insert the key into the ignition switch and then pull it out.

3. Press the Master Door Lock Switch (this would be the switch IN the car) 5 times from Lock to Unlock.

4. Close the Driver's door then open it.

5. Repeat step 3.

6. Now select the mode by inserting the key into the ignition switch and turning it to the Run or On position. The programming mode is determined by the amount of times you go from key off to the key on position and back before pulling the key out.

A. 1 time is the Add mode. This is used only on some models and it allows you to add a remote to the already existing remotes. The ECU confirms this by locking and unlocking the door locks automatically after you remove the key.

B. 2 times is the Erase mode which will erase all previously programmed remotes and allow you to program new ones. The ECU confirms this mode by locking and unlocking the door locks twice after you remove the key

C. 3 times is the third mode which tells you how many remotes are already programmed to the ECU. It confirms this locking and unlocking the doorlocks the amount of times applicable to the remotes coded. If no remotes are programmed then the ECU locks and unlocks the door locks 5 times. The ECU will hold up to 4 remotes at any one time.

7. Press the Lock and Unlock buttons on the remote simultaneously for 1.5 sec and then press either button by itself for 1 sec.

8. The ECU will perform the Lock/Unlock automatically to confirm that the 1st remote is stored by the ECU. Repeat step 7 immediately with another remote and continue until all remotes are registered.

9. Shut the driver’s door and try all remotes.

FOR 2002+

Procedure

1. Make sure all doors and windows are closed.

2. Insert master key into the ignition cylinder.

3. Cycle the ignition cylinder from ON to OFF 5 times.

4. Open and close the driver side door 6 times.

5. Remove the master key and insert the new duplicate key.

6. DO NOT TURN THE IGNITION CYLINDER ON

7. The new key will be registered after 60 seconds.

The details that vivherman explained do work. I have bought a spare key off eBay and use that process to programme

it. Worth trying first.

Hi guys, well, I ordered a key from eBay today but saw some other advice on the internet that I thought I would try in the meantime and it worked!!!! It was so simple too.. so for anyone experiencing this problem, please try this:-

Open the drivers door with the key. The alarm will go off but you just have to ignore it.

Put the key in the ignition and turn it on (without starting the engine).

Press the unlock button on the key twice - the first time nothing happens and the second time the locks click.

Then lock the car with the key and unlock - it should work!!! SO SIMPLE!!

thanks for all your advice and help
