Volcanic Dust

Hi all - with all the airlines concerned about their jet engines and paintwork, anyone know of any issues for cars if the dust gets down to low level as in Scotland?

I am guessing that there might be engine issues relating to wear from the rock dust rather that the sort of issues jets have, since car engines do not get to the same working temperatures.

It was already reported that there were paint issues - again I am guessing that this is due to the abrasive effect of the dust rather than any chemical issues.

On a related basis, travelling in dusty areas - does anyone have any suggestions for upgrading the RAV engine and cabin filters, I am thinking of something like a snorkel, but more subtle. I did a search thinking our Aussie cousins might have done something, but only got Corrolla induction kits etc.

Any thoughts?

Each time I accelerate hard in the RAV it creates a mini volcanic dust cloud.... just to give the drivers behind a feeling of what's about to come once the rain is here.....

Any one seen the film Dante's Peak.... Best keep an eye on that volcano under Yellow Stone Park.......blowup.gifblowup.gifblowup.gif

the air filter you have is sufficient for the job - as you know, jet engines don't tend to have an airfilter - which is why I suppose they get affected by bird strike?? As opposed to BA strike.

There can be excessive damage done to engines if you remove the filter or don't replace it often enough. With the amount of salt/grit on the roads now showing up as dust in the dry weather, then we are already experiencin g our own dust cloud.

Nice one wardude.

With regard to paint, try and keep it inside if poss but wash it regularly in plenty of soapy water and frequent rinsing. As far as the filters go then short of modifying just do what it says for dusty conditions and change the filters more frequently.

I doubt it has got to that just yet but as volcanos can erupt for years I suppose we have to monitor it.

The modification query came from the fact that I drive on a fair number of dusty tracks (rock dust etc.) in the UK and abroad and was interested if anyone has done anything to their RAV in this regard?
