Hi everyone, looking for some advice regaurding my rav D4D 2001 53000 miles, fith gear started rattling 6 mounth ago, then gear knob started moving under thottle, now slips out of gear when engaged.Seen this problem on older models, easy access to fifth. Is it the same on the D4D,i fear not looking at it.Also had DMF done last year now out of warranty and the clutch judders sometimes when pulling away and appears a little noisy when depressed, could live with this but cant afford another hit if its the DMF again.Any advice on these issues would be appreciated.

With regard to the judder, check all then engine mountings are OK but if not it could be oil on the clutch or something else worn. Fifth gear is very similar to the earlier models and can be accessed from under the tin end plate. I've probably got pdf's if you need them.

Spoke to a toyota "specialist" today and he claims gearbox has to come out on the D4D unlike earlier models, and has quoted 1200 plus extra 300 for a clutch if needed. The car owes me quite a bit of money, and got a good mind to cut my loses and put it on eBay with the problems listed and get what i can for it rather then take another big hit,but if you have any information would be a help.

They reckon the engine has to come out on a 4.3 to do the water pump and it doesn't. Get a good mechanic to take that cover off and have a look. If it has to come out, it has to come out but I would have a damn good try first.

don't start me!!

the engine has to come out for clutch change - but having had 3 clutches in my racing RAv, it can be doen in situ.... its laziness on the part of mechanics - get/find a JAP engine tuning specialist and they will either do it or recommend a place that can - properly.
