I'm back guys...with another question and would really appreciate your help...thank you in advance guys...

okay...re my 2001 51 Avensis hatch SR 1.8vvti manual with 86k...

why is it every morning when i try and start my car its a little hesitant to start? I put the key in and turn it slightly but 99.9% it cuts out and fires up/turns over on my 2nd try!

My partner recons that i'm not turning the key enough but if i turn it all the way its going to make that horrible noise you get. The car was fully serviced by myself in November 09 (spark plugs, oil filter, air filter, fuel filter, new engine and gearbox oil)so its not as if its not been well cared for...saying that i've only had it 5 months now and saying that can't wait to get rid in January 2011 lol! I do have a faulty lambda o2 sensor which triggers the engine light every now and again on longer runs ( i admit i have poor fuel consumption because of this however and need to get it sorted!!!) but that cant be related to my starting issue can it? May be something needs cleaning? Had the alternator checked a month back when i installed a new Battery as the old one died and it was fine! I would like to fix it as its scary not knowing if the car's gonna start each morning! Please let me know your comments. Thank you.

Suggest not enough electrical power getting to the starter motor to get it going. A car does need a lot of oomph to get started and anything that stops that initial power surge getting through will stop it starting. Check Battery connections on Battery, clean the connectors, check earth connection on car is clean and rust free. If in doubt disconnect and give a good clean. Alternator sounds fine and it's a new Battery so can only suggest that power isn't getting through as it should. Was the coil replaced? Check HT leads on plugs and make sure there are no cracks in them where water and damp could have git in. Try damp start once or twice before starting and see if that helps. Are the belts slipping? Just a few things to try.

My 1st reply so far and i really appreciate it, thank you, i will check all those things 1st thing tomorrow!

just unsure what you mean when you ask if the coil was replaced? where is the coil?

Also you asked me to try a damp start...what does that mean? ie how do i do it?

Re the belt slipping...looking at the belt it looks in good nick although i need notice a light crack dead centre in the middle only at 1 point but the crack is not going across as if the belt will snap, its going downwards so should be okay for now! a few weeks back it was making a slight noise but seems okay now!

Please do let me know...thanks again

the avensis has coil packs on each plug IIRC(they make the spark). doubt this is the issue if it runs ok when started.

the lambda issue could cause problems.

what is the strange noise you get when turning the key all the way when starting, the ignition switch (connected to the ignition key barrel)can cause problems on the avensis and it could be this that's your problem.

Apologies.

Damp start is a can of fluid that you use to spray the electrics of a car when they have become damp. It expels the water

and allows the car to start. However, in modern cars I would suggest this should not be a problem unless some of the

electric cables have become cracked and worn - unlikely though.

I would ask what the noise is as well? Does seem that this maybe a problem that could affect starting. Does it happen

everytime you turn the key regardless whether the engine is hot or cold?
