Gear Selection Cables?

hi its me again about my first gear problem. my lil aygo went in to toyota a month ago and had a new clutch and drive shaft, the mechanic said they had test drove it and said my first gear was working properly now. iv just taken it back with the same problem as before, the same mechanic now said i have a problem with my gear selection cable and need a new one. my car has only done 3500miles. im quite surprised its needing all these new parts. its under warranty thank god. what is a gear selection cable? and shouldn't they have spotted it last month when they put a new clutch and drive shaft in? please help.

its one of the cables that literally goes from the bottom of your gear stick to the gear box, it may well be that the cable was damaged or mis-installed when they did the previous work... or maybe not
