Violent Gear Change

I have a 1.8 petrol auto on a 56 plate.

The gear change is generally very smooth. Occasionally however the change from 3rd gear to 2nd can be very violent and spine jarring. If it’s going to happen it will be on a long steep incline and the gear box will have already changed down to 3rd. Then there is this lull where the car is struggling and really wants to change to 2nd but it hesitates and then bang, the worst gear change you can imagine. The problem appears to be getting worse and in anticipation of this awful gear change I will switch to sequential mode and knock it manually into 2nd. When I do this the change down is fine.

Mr T can’t find anything wrong?

has the ATF been changed ?

Cmia - AFT has not been changed. Car is duea Major service in 1000 miles and AFT is one of the items scheduled to get changed. Hopefully that will fix the problem.
