New Owner - Service Help

Hey All,

I'm a newbie so please be gentle with me :)

I purchased a 55 plate Toyota Avensis last September. It's a 2.2 litre diesel T-Spirit and was first registered in January 2006. I'm very happy with it so far. It's currently approaching 64K miles and I'm looking to give her her first service in my ownership.

As this is the first diesel car that I've owned, I was looking for guidance on what should be checked/replaced at this stage. I've had a quick look at the service schedule provided by a link in another thread but I'm struggling to understand it as I'm not very technically minded. Please could someone give me an idiot-proof list of what should be checked/replaced.

I was thinking the following:

- Brake pads (front and rear)

- Air filter

- Fuel filter

- Oil filter

- Pollen filter

- Engine oil (which viscosity/rating should I use? Any recommendations?)

- Coolant

- Glow plugs (though I've been told these don't need replacing unless I'm having starting problems. Can anyone confirm?)

- Cambelt & tensioners (again, been told the car has chain driven cams, so cambelt doesn't need replacing and neither do tensioners? Can anyone confirm either way. Also, if cambelt is not changed, should the waterpump still be replaced?)

Have I missed anything?

Any help and advice would be really appreciated :)

Thanks in advance

hi mate

In order to have yr lady taken over you must to know and track each liquid poured in, besides:

- Brake pads (front and rear)--they have a wear indicator -- but alco can be easily inspected by means of wheel removal;

- Air filter -- i used to change it as due during each 10k service;

- Fuel filter-- ditto

- Oil filter---ditto

- Pollen filter ---ditto

- Brake system liquid --i'd change it;

- Engine oil (which viscosity/rating should I use? Any recommendations?)--5W30

- Coolant-- it is normally due to change each 2 years + depending on its density + use an original long life one recomended by MrT;

- Glow plugs --if engine starts well -- do not screw them out -- but just use a degrease solvent to clean (+)contacts and around the (-) thread/col head hole to prevent an electricity short cut;

- Cambelt & tensioners -- i have no comments on this one cos have no manual -- just wait for diesel owners - they will come back shortly/

And the most important to record each works done for future reference. besides these records help to sell the car in the future, when new owner will see it as all there is to know.Good luck/Igor
