I read that the VVTi is NOT convertible to LPG. I have found an AVENSIS 1.8 VVTi GS LPG GAS DUAL FUEL and was about to buy it. ANY ADVICE PLEASE

Hi,

I seem to remember that Toyota explicitly excludes warranty on LPG fitted engines, and more in general, direct injection petrol engines cannot be converted to LPG.

The reason is twofold, in that the cylinder head valve seats are not designed for LPG use, and the injectors can overheat because of the lack of cooling.

The moral:

Expensive problems ahead, that will outweigh any cost saving by a multiple.

If you know what I mean...

Over here, LPG use is widespread, but I've never seen an Avensis tanking it.

Technically it can be done, and looks mathematically attractive, but seems to be a gamble.

Hi,

I do agree with above. I was trying to convert my Avensis 2.0 Litre petrol for LPG but few big garages refused to do it, one of them said I can do it but will not give you a warranty. They said also that all VVTi cars should not be converted at all.

Also Toyota UK has confirmed that this engines cannot be converted.

So I believe them because it would cost me to do this around 1200 pounds so if they refuse make money, this must to be true.

Rgds

If you can read German, I can give you a link to the German Avensis LPG forum to see their experiences there.

Not alltogether positive though...

Some make to 40000 Km without cost, a few even till 90000 km, but are then faced with huge repair bills.

Not worth the risk IMHO.

...taxis in thailand ...

He probably means "in Bangkok", because outside the Capital LPG is not widely available.

If the cylinder heads are the same as those in use in Europe, they probably get away with it by installing Stellite valve seats and a FlashLube injection system.

As labour cost in Thailand is a fraction, having those machined in could be justifyable.

Or maybe they just don't care and replace the cylinder head or even the entire engine when it quits.

A cylinder head itself is not that expensive, it's mainly the number of hours required to do the job.
