Rattle A/c Compressor

A couple of days ago I noticed a metallic rattling noise coming from the drivers side of the engine (not audible from inside the cabin)

A cursory inspection by a Toyota technician stated that it was probably the A/C compressor and or pulley bearings (further inspection advised).

The noise is audible when the car is idling with A/C off, disappears for a minute when the A/C is switched on but then starts again and the frequency of the rattling seeems greater but with the same noise level. The A/C seems to be working fine but there is an odour when first switched on.

Is it the A/C compressor or the bearings and should a garage be able to tell the difference easily?

Can the bearings be replaced without effecting the compressor?

Is there any danger in not getting it fixed?

Are there any cheaper options than the £1000 repair bill from Toyota?
