Yes in 2mths time my rav will have achieved 3yrs + 14000mls..So i intend booking it in for its 3yr service + MOT whilst the warranty is still valid, I want to ask them to check any issues that may occur or known re-calls, can anyone advise on any specific problems that i should ask them to check? Secondly I asked my dealer if they could look into an extended warranty bearing in mind my low mileage, and i am dissapointed to say they failed to get back to me, considering again my low mileage + that i very much doubt my car will have covered 30,000mls by the time its 6yr old, Do you think its worthwhile? as its money i could well do without spending at the moment.. advice/comments very welcome..Thanks  Stew

It's one of those things Stu, if you pay for it you may never use it. On the other hand something big could go and cost you £££ in repairs!

A 2 year extended warranty, with a 20000 mile limit, will set you back £685.

wot a dilemna

5 doors and diesel and yer asking daft questions as well. Hate to say this but can you get a 3 year warranty with NHS??? If not, then is the warranty transferable?

My number 1 has been back on the track, albeit slower times due to wet conditions and a shoulder injury preventing me from fast gear changes. The car is a 1994 and only done about 174,000 miles. Number 2 RAV is up at about 84,000 miles and being a 1994 model is well better condition than number 1. none of the hinges have had to be greased, nor has the petrol flap (do you have these on a diesel?)

Then again, number 2 needed a gearbox as the gear wheel for the speedo sensor failed. Number 1 keeps burning out alternators, perhaps as its running 8000rpm.

So if yer warranty is from a reputable company like BP Oils, and unlikely to go bust, then I suppose its a payment worth spending.

ps

thank goodness Shell VPlus is back in stock as all 3 motors thrive on it. Thinking of swtching the 6 charity dieselly oil burning trucks to biodiesel as its cheaper, and they are all low mileage a year. And waiting for the arrival of a new JCB 515 to play with..... wheel changes in under 70 seconds guaranteed altho no warranty on undercarriage damage!

Well Stew,  As you probably know, I had an extra 2 years warranty on my 2005 RAV4. That cost about £650 extra at the time for the Unlimited miles version - 10,000/year version would be less.

In that extended warranty time, I can recall I called on the warranty once for new discs all round so saved I think just under £500 of Main Dealer parts and labour costs, plus I had the 2 years full RAC(AA) Cover as well, so on that basis I probably just about broke even.  However, if I was not covered, then I could have had the repair done for maybe half the cost elsewhere.

Also, if you take out the warranty, then you will HAVE to have the car serviced by Toyota in the agreed schedules to keep it valid.  could be a factor if you want to save costs by going non-franchise servicing?

As duncerduncs says, could be one of those things that you may never need and think it was wasted or not pay and wish you had it - same as any insurance policy really.

FWIW, I regarded the extended warranty as an cost-effective alternative to replacing the car after 3 years as I like that Peace of Mind coverage it provided (though recent comments about how Toyota are treating claims have concerned me and did influence my decision to not extend again after 5 years and p/x my RAV instead - for a new car with a five year/100,000 mile warranty  )
