Rav4 Power Loss

Hi Everyone

My Rav4 has been a first time starter since I bought it in January, but just recently it has been taking one or two attempts to get it started in a morning from cold, and this has now evolved further so that when the engine starts, there is absolutely no power at all until the engine warms up - no matter how much you try and coax the engine, or no matter how far you depress the accelerator the car just drives at a very slow speed with no throttle response, which is downright dangerous if you are trying to pull into a busy road. Once the engine warms up all is OK and the power comes back on.

Does anyone have any experience of what might be wrong - Toyota had a look at it but couldn't find anything as there were no fault codes logged or any engine management lights coming on.

I intend to book it back in to the dealer as it's still under the warrenty - it is however 6 years old and has approx 73k on the clock.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Andy H

Strange one that andy, I would have said EGR valve but it wouldn't explain why it sorts itself out when warm. It could be a simple thing like the engine temperature sensor isn't giving the correct resistance so the injectors aren't allowing extra fuel injected in under cold conditions. I don't know the correct resistance of the sensor but might be worth checking price of new one and maybe just changing it if not too much money.

worth seeing what anyone else says first though :thumbsup:

Thanks for the reply Mach1, I have booked it in for next week when Toyota can have a look at it when its fully cold - hope they can find something. Maybe someone else has come across something similar.

hello Andy

1) If engine is started well then control system is in order;

2) quote:"no matter how far you depress the accelerator the car just drives at a very slow speed"-- try to change fuel filter.

I have had similar on previous car - -yes the simptoms are very similar unless I changed fuel filter.

Sometimes the problem is close to you but you think more globally etc. Have it changed and revert. Cheers/Igor

Thanks Igor - will certainly have a look at that if Toyota can't sort it out.
