I've got an Elm 327 - work pretty well once you persuade it to talk on the com port correctly. Only reads the engine stuff though - no ABS or anything like that. Fun to watch the realtime dash on your PC though.

I take it you want one to hook up to a pc rather than stand alone?

When I bought my reader I didn't really have access to a laptop so bought a standalone. Now with my shiny w7 thing it would be nice pretending to know what I'm doing with a lappy connected to the car (should impress the neighbours!)As Godstalker says , I have a usb to serial adapter for the computer and can get it to talk to my amateur radio gear but doesn't recognize the port for some satellite tv software so setting up may not be straightforward (unless your son works in IT - Oh he does!) For that price I'm tempted to get one and have a play. Have a google , there's some interesting comments about clones on the net.

Looks like a go then, after the comments posted for which I am grateful.

Unless, in the unlikely event of someone unable to agree with them.

Do not tread that path lightly
