Avensis Heavy Pedals

Hello!

I'm having real trouble coping with the clutch and accelerator pedals on my V reg Avensis 1.8 on anything but short journeys. Both pedals are pretty heavy, much more so than on any other car I've driven before, even other Avensis's. The clutch has been replaced which made a slight difference amd the pedal brushes have been lubricated, again having a very small effect.

One thing I wanted to try was to remove the approx 4 cm springs attached to both pedals in the foot-well to see if this made a difference. However, I'm not sure if these springs are vital to the accelerator and clutch operation. I would appreciate it if someone could tell me what the springs are for, if either of them can be removed safely and also if anyone has another suggested approach I could use.

Thanks in advance :)

It could be the clutch cable or the thrust bearing might need replacing.

Not sure about the accelerator cable though, perhaps it needs slackening off slightly.

Your clutch will be hydraulic & not cable! This should mean the clutch is lighter. Thrust bearing will not improve force required to operate.

My clutch pedal ( 01 Avensis ) is also heavy but have been advised this is normal!

I would not advise any removal of springs as they are vital to pedal returning to home position. There is a bolt ( Horizontal )which holds pedal to supports, try loosen slightly. This may help.

Seems to be a common issue on Avensis.

Yep, I have to agree too. The clutch pedal is rather heavy on the Avensis.

I would strongly recommend leaving any adjustments in the foorwell to professionals. Removing the springs is a big no-no as they are normally essential to the proper working of the pedals. Loosening bolts can also lead to problems unless the nuts are locked onto the bolts. You don't want the bolt falling out when your driving

If the springs are responsible then getting weaker ones may help. Greasing the pedal mechanism may also help. For a hydraulic clutch there's not much to be done, as the heaviness is due to the ratio of the slave and mater pistons in the hydraulic system.
