Clocking Fraud

As I have just replaced my imported mr2 dial from kmh to mph. I found out I can just fidle with the mileage clock. The mileage never record on any of the initial document (before MOT and registration)

How can u stop an import dealer doing such thing?

nope - you can't ..

Best suggestion? Get the Jap history with the car .. mine had all the servicing up to 3 months before export .. and I only know this as the date is the only thing I could read in the Jap SH ..

so how do i know if my car been clocked in japan? I know clocking in japan is very serious offence but.......

If it's been clocked using the old thumb method...then the only way to tell is when the odometer is about to hit a waterstone ..ie say 50000 you'll find most clocked cars, that when it hits 50000 then the numbers don't line up. or at 51, or 52 etc... not scientific, but a good indicator.

i cant say that i agree with that..

My Celica that i have just sold had FDSH.. and all MOT's...

And yet the numbers were still not perfectly straight...

Yep, the ones too look out for are the ones with perfectly straight numbers.

If a car's been clocked by alot, you should be able to tell by the wear on the pedals, seats e.t.c, unless they've all been changed aswell.

the gear stick and steering wheel are places where these miles will make a mark... they tend to replace the gear knob with a after market one to try and hide the milage..

wow, by that mean... If I'm a good con.. I can just replace with a nearly new used gear knob and steering from scrap or eBay..

I have started to lose confident in buying car unless there is service history and sensible MOT record (not 100miles a year)..

the steering wheel is not always a good way to tell.. if the wheel is leather the top of the wheel always drys and looks worse on an import due to the climate in Japan

I was lucky to find full history with mine in the glove box.. dealer did not know this so got it for a better price

Alot of cars are clocked.. why do you think the history is lost? seems strange how 2 outta 10 cars have no history whatsoever

You can only ever have your best guess, and check everything again, again and again, if it doesn't fit with the diplayed mileage then walk away.

I'll never now how people buy cars off e-bay without looking.
