1998 Avensis With Weird Alarm Noise

hi,

Bit of a weird one. My 1998 avensis has a very quiet and faint alarm sound coming from somewhere under the bonnet.However, the immobiliser and, presumably, the main alarm are functioning normally, the car starts and drives. So I am at a loss to what the noise is...???

Any suggestions greatly received.

Don't know if you've found your answer yet, but I had exactly the same problem and traced it to the tailgate light/alarm switch which is situated under the catch. It was dirty and conducting a very small current, making the alarm control box think the tailgate was open, but not quite, so not going into full alarm. Prize the plastic cover off and take out the switch to clean it, then apply a small amount of grease to repel moisture. Or a quick fix will be to spray the switch with WD40 or any other moisture repellant.
