Absolutely Pathetic Mpg

Ok, in liverpool it is currently 27 degrees (i dont know what that is in the old money but very hot anyways) and i drove my auris with no load or passengers round suburbia today for about 45 mins. The air conditioning was on with all the windows and sun roof closed and i was not driving the car like a f1 driver, just normal driving. Fifth gear being used at and above 40mph only and guess what my mpg was. A absolutly miserable, pathetic 16.1mpg!!!! What are toyota doing!!!!!!!!!!!!????????? The car has only just passed the 12k mile mark on the odometer and everything is right. I never get this low an mpg, even with 5 people in the car. For the same mpg you could have a golf or scirocco R with a 260ps engine! But even with this, i still love the auris t180. Anyone else having this problem? Ive only got the car for another week but still.

it just does me head in a bit because the scirocco r with its 260ps engine will do no less than 25 to the gallon in the city and suburbia and for this u get a car which will do 0-60 in 6 seconds and has a top speed of 155mph (without the limiter it will go faster), even the 210ps scirocco im getting will do no less than 28mpg. I think the 5th injector is the reason for this for sure. DPF technology basically means, use more fuel but you will have virtually no particulate matter. I would rather have the fuel thankyou very much

don't be so confident in your MPG figures for the VW, when I had the CTR Honda quote 20MPG around town but I will tell you for 100% sure in the winter doing short 3mile journeys you can be down to 10MPG very easily and in the summer it could still easily be 16MPG

i know mate, i mean i say it all the time i love the t180 and it will be sad to see it go BUT for better mpg i will have a better performing proper hot hatch. Oh and its a dsg auto so im sure the mpg figures will be accurate.

mpg figures will be accurate only in the lab conditions that manufacturers test the cars in when doing the MPG figures, I will suspect you wont get any closer than 5MPG of the stated MPG in real life driving conditions

even with the 1500 pound dsg box? with paddle shifters?

makes no difference you will 100% not get the quoted MPG, you may get close but at the end of the day manufacturers test these in the best possible conditions to get the MPG as high as possible to try and sell more cars. What they dont do when doing an MPG test is drive like you and me and everyone else and on the same roads we would use etc

I must appear like the forum killjoy on this subject

The temp was 24 on the way back from work on friday. Got 55.2mpg then hit town and it dropped to 52mpg.

I'm certain that will continue to fall with the colder, slower morning traffic.

i would never drive a hybrid unless it was the lexus gs600 one i think it is, 4 litre v6 mated to a hybrid motor. Much better than a 1.8 mated to a hyrbrid motor

Town and Dual Carriageway 45mpg average, over the last 2 weeks. I live in North Essex and it is damn hot here, so I'm not moaning. I might do in the winter, but for now I'm happy.

I think it is an issue with your car, my MPG isn't too bad. It's been sitting about the 45 mark though I just found out my EGR valve was blocked so it may improve when I get it back.

I do about 70 miles a day to work and back on a mixture of country lanes and dual carriageways. Even with one of Kingo's 200+ bhp chipboxes fitted and the tendancy to nail it occasionally I'm getting a rock steady 44 mpg...

Your motors defo got a big problem.

Hi, did you find the MPG has got better with the box fitted or just stayed about the same and also how many miles have you now covered with this fitted? Just one more quick question is what tyres do you have fitted as I dont know if you have seen my tyre mpg poll?

Thanks in advance

The engine has had all the recalls done and has been serviced anually so there shouldnt be a problem with it, its only done 12k miles as well so again there shudnt be any problems. It doesnt matter now anyways, i pick yup my 210ps vw scirocco tommorrow to replace the auris.

The bizarre thing I am finding with the Auris is that the difference between hammering the car, and driving cautiously, is about 5mpg. Which to me isn't right. 31ish driving hard, 36ish driving feather footedly in a way that is really impractical for the real world. With the S3 you got low-mid 30's driving cautious, low teens when hammering it.

If this doesn't get fixed I'll be pretty ****** off though. I only got rid of the S3 because of the economy issues. The Auris is only marginally better!

What I find is up Scotland with more open roads out of town etc you can easily achieve 40+ with a light foot, this will drop in town due to traffic and traffic lights etc but if you drive out of town a lot then 40mpg should be achievable. Check the EGR valve because if it is blocked then this will be were your MPG is going ;)
