Abs Issue

Hi all,

The other day (Sat) my ABS light stayed on once the car was fully started. Looked in my manual and it obviously said to take it to a Toyota dealer. The next day (Sun) the light didn't stay on on 2 seperate journeys, so I thought maybe it was a sensor issue that had fixed itself. Then yesterday and today it stayed on again.

My question really is do I have to take it specifically to a Toyota dealer or is it something my local garage could check out for me? Would it be safe to drive until I can get to a garage (Toyota or otherwise), and if it needs to be a Toyota garage is it the kind of thing I have to phone up in advance and book in or could I just turn up?

Many thanks in advance!

Update: driving to swimming, light stayed on. Driving home from swimming 40 mins later, light not on!

Any semi competent mechanic with a multimeter should be able to diagnose it. (I could and I am not a mechanic)

Whilst the light is on, ABS is disabled but the brakes by themselves work as normal: just you have no ABS.

I'd ring up for an appointment at any garage... otherwise you roll up on a day when they are full and waste your time..

99% likely that it is the front passenger side wheel sensor.. search for other ABS post.

Thanks for that Mad, I did search for ABS topics but didn't see that one, doh!

The light was off again driving home from work, and driving in to work today so I feel a bit better that its probably just the sensor rather than a "proper" ABS problem. I'll phone up the garage today and take it in on Fri/Mon. Once they diagnose the problem will I still have to take it to a Toyota garage to get the right part? I notice from the other ABS post that you have to get the specific one.
