Die to MPG problem here http://www.toyotaownersclub.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=110857 would you please vote on this poll to see if my tyre theory could be correct, you can vote twice in case you have experience with the original Dunlop tyres fitted as well as others. Please add comments on tyres below so as we may see a pattern on what tyres seem to be good with the MPG.

Well we travelled south this morning and over about 120miles at 60-70mph we got 38.4mpg, While driving I was thinking to when this dropped and thought that it was around Dec09. Back in Nov 09 we changed all 4 tyres Vredestein Sessanta and these are very good in both wet and dry conditions, Would I buy them again then No because after around 6k the fronts are half worn so these are also a lot softer than I was led to believe. I also know that some civic owners had these and did rate them but said their mpg dropped by around 3mpg with these fitted, so now I am wondering if this could be were our mpg has gone as now the best I can get is around 42mpg were before with Dunlops fitted it was 46mpg. That is 4mpg short and maybe the few mpg the civic owners reported went missing.

The question is out of all the people who cant or struggle to get 40mpg how many of these have the original Dunlop SP01 tyres fitted as I am beginning to think that maybe the people who do not moan have Dunlops fitted and maybe others dont.

Dunlops for me. Only ever had these. Only changed 2 tyres in 31k. Still plenty of tread left.

Hi,

Just joined up as I thought I would contribute to this thread as I have just had fitted 2 Khumo's to the front after the original Dunlops wore out after 17.5K mls - this was slightly dissapointing as previous FWDs have managed at least 20k.

I shall be interested to see if the mpg is affetcted as I have been regularly returning 43mpg urban and up to 48 on a (varied speed)run.

Regards

GJT

Bridgestone Turanza; one of the best in the summer/rain, nightmare in the winter; mpg is ok (40.00mpg at 70 mph)

We swapped our original Dunlop Sp01 front to the rear at 18k, at 28K the wife drove a flat and ruined they tyre and as I could not match the tyre we bought 4 x new ones. The Dunlops would have still had around 5k left at that time

So far the trend is beginning to back up what I was thinking that maybe the tyres are an important factor / difference between get 45mpg and only getting 40mpg. Any thoughts on this from owners is very welcome;)

I'm not sure Rick.

I just can't see tyres causing a +25% drop off in economy. Tyres have made negligible differences to the economy my past cars, provided you're not going for something uber sporty.

25% yes for sure not down to tyres but the civic owners did say there MPG dropped around 3mpg with the same tyres I have fitted, now on my latest run at 37mpg compared to about 43mpg I would have expected if this was 100% down to the tyres then it is around 11% short. I will also add since I have had these tyres fitted we have got no where near what we used to get (could just be coincidence) and the fact of the poll is showing the only people who get near the 45mpg have the original Dunlop SP01a fitted and no one with other tyres is close to that.
