Speedcamera Database

I use a Novus GPS Rider after my old Talex system died. Speed Camera's are nothing more than a system for generating revenue and for every one in an accident blackspot there are probably 2 more just for the extra pennies they claw in. I stick to speed limit's in built up area's but everywhere else I drive / ride (as I am an anti-social biker as well) at a speed appropriate to the prevailing conditions.

Seeing as the Prius Speedo is out by roughly 8% i use a Roadangel Speed camera detector, very accurate on the speed side of things and no worries about Cameras *Happy Days*

most speedos are inaccurate so people go through 30mph Cameras doing 26 mph thinking there doing 30 mph anyway  Stompe

Swindon has done away with its speed cameras. There has been no increase in the accident rate in fact it is slightly lower than with the cameras.

I agree with Grumpie Cabbie that there are some towns that have speed cameras but no clear indication to motorists as to what the speed limit is. Blackpool is one of these places. eg Dual carriageway with cameras no clear speed limit signs. Locals told me it was 30MPH.

One of the great features of the talex / novus is when going through SPECS camera's you can sail through at well over a speedo indicated 50mph using the GPS Speedo. Cruise on at 49mph and everyone else seems to be going backwards :)

Whilst not specifically speed camera related, I had a Garmin for my old car and paid for the lifetime map updates. I also have installed a database of shops, hotels and Inns and other points of interest on it. Now with my Prius I have to pay for the update from Toyota or have the Garmin on the windsreen. Fortunately I don't undertake many long distance journeys but it would be nice to know about new roads. However the system on my Prius does not seem to want to take full 6 character postcodes which is a real pain.

I really feel that it must be technologically possible with a few tweeks to plug in a Garmin or similar into an inbuilt sat nav system in any car that has one. I cannot help feeling that by not making this possible manufacturers are committing the same sort of sin as Microsoft were charged with by supplying PC's with just their own web browser. Ultimately this led them to being fined millions and being forced to offer the ability to opt to use a competitors web browser. I think that this precedent equally applies to inbuilt sat navs and that if enough noise is made manufacturers will be forced to offer the ability to integrate other systems into their display screen. Given that Sat Nav is increasingly available as a standard option in new cars firms such as Garmin and Tom Tom will have a limited market for their products.

I think you do not quite understand how a speed camera data base works ??? It is not a license to speed between cameras and avoid a penalty ticket !!firstly they do warn of speed camera areas ( fixed AND MOBILE SITES )!! these cameras according to the government are placed in these areas as they known accident black spots .if the warnings remind the motorist that this is an accident black spot area the speed camera warning data base has done its job .

To be honest 99% of the time I obey the speed limits and if I do not its usually just a lack in concentration on my behalf ?? can you honestly hand on heart say that the speed limit on motorways of 70 MPH with today's standard of vehicles is acceptable .

The main danger on the roads these days are caused by cars driving in a manner that is dangerous which because of the lack of police cars patrolling the roads do not get caught !! not the driver going 35 MPH in a 30MPH zone

Hi B_V

Having worked in the motor trade all my life and having attended many serious "Accidents" to recover vehicles, I am well aware of what a speed camera is supposed to do. Why should a camera warning alert make you a safer driver? If you were a better trained driver you would be aware of road dangers, types of road and hazards, and you would drive to the conditions of the road and none of us would need cash generating cameras in our lives

So you advocate that going above the legal speed limit on Motorways is acceptable because cars are now safer? I have a problem with that, firstly cars are very much safer, however drivers are not. Drivers also have a problem whereby they "Feel" safer because there car is fitted with air bags, ABS etc etc but when push comes to shove have no experience whatsoever in handling a car under emergency conditions. Secondly, our Govenment implement laws and they deem the speed limit is 70 MPH whether you like it or not

Over 2800 children are killed or seriously injured as pedestrians, which I would suggest are probably in areas where speed cameras are located, and over 5800 adult pedestrians are killed or seriously injured AS WELL.

So as far as I'm concerned, by all means get yourself a speed camera database, but while you are at it, take a few advanced driver lessons too, it might prove more constructive than a gadget bleeping at you on the dashboard

Hello Kingo

Having a speed camera K1 does not make anyone a more dangerous driver !! Unlike yourself I have never had a speeding ticket !!does it make me a better driver than yourself ?? no it doesn't of course !! members of the advanced drivers institute have accidents even highly trained police drivers do !!

inappropriate speed for the conditions and lack of driver concentration causes accidents!!

Do you take the same attitude when your company Lindop sell tuning chips to increase the performance of a standard engine !! I would have thought that may be more dangerous to the 2800 children that are killed or seriously injured and over 5800 adult pedestrians killed or seriously injured as pedestrians than a motorist having a warning device on the dashboard that tells them they are travelling over the speed limit

Not for as long as factory fitted systems are as rubbish as Toyota's is.

I have not made any claims regarding cameras and better drivers, what I do say is that instead of investing in a camera database, invest in some driver training. Fixed cameras are (in my mind) a cash generating tool that has little benefit to road safety. I would prefer to see more unmarked and marked Police on our roads, especially in built up areas as Motorways are generally the safest type of road, the only trouble with a motorway is that when it does go wrong, it goes wrong in a big way!

As for performance chips, yes they produce more power, better economy, and smooth out the power delivery. They don't turn ordinary motorists into boy racers, it is a world of choice, do we all jump into 1.0 Litre cars so less people are killed or injured on the roads? No we don't. As I said in my original post, the motoring public are seen as an easy target to generate cash and that is what I dont agree with. Most people pass their test at 18 or so and never even think about how to improve their driving let alone get any further training. There will always be accidents but being better drivers and more aware of how our cars perform under duress will be of far more benefit to the country than a database gizmo on the dashboard.

Agree

Agree

Agree but a speed camera data base does not as well

There will always be accidents but being better drivers and more aware of how our cars perform under duress will be of far more benefit to the country than a database gizmo on the dashboard.

Or under the bonnet

While you seem to agree with me on most things the one thing you failed to mention that the biggest cause of accidents is inexperience, tailgating and poorly designed roads not a person having a gizmo on the dashboard

I agree with your agreement  except I did make the point that driver skills are way short of the mark and thats what needs improving ;)
