Cracking Noise From Windscreen / Dashboard

Avensis luna 03

I have noticed in cold weather that there is a cracking noise coming from either the dashboard or the windscreen. It is worst on a rough suface. This happens in a 1999 Avensis and to a lesser extent a 2003 Avensis. Could it be the bonding on the windscreen? Has anyone else come across the problem?

Don't have any experience with the first gen Avensis, but there have been comments about solving various rattles in threads here and there in this forum. I assume that a current owner can maybe advise.

On the other hand for the T25 Avensis (the '03 one) I'm surprised that you're getting noises. I get a bit of wind howl at high speed, but that's from the rear, and the windscreen wipers make an loud swishing noise in a crosswind. But I don't get a cracking noise at any time. See if you can localise it with the help of a passenger. If it really is the windscreen then take it in to your dealer - something's not right!

Actually I'm fairly impressed with the noise levels in the latest Avensis - I got worried by a clicking noise a few weeks ago every time I went round a corner. Finally traced the noise it was a CD case in the door pocket

Talking about noise, I noticed a noise like water flowing over pebbles from the dashboard area of my 2001 Avensis. I couldn't locate specifically what causes the noise but it occurs when my speed reaches 60miles/h. Anywhere above that speed, the noise remains constant and disappears if I drop below that limit. I have checked, there is nothing loose in the dashboard. Has anybody experienced that kind of noise?

Does your Avensis have a sunroof, because mine makes a noise like the ones you are desribing which sounds like it's coming from the dashboard but actually goes away if you press on the sunroof glass.

I have a 99 Avensis SE and at 60mph plus I get a sound of cracking on my windscreen, as if I'm hitting bugs, bees etc...

I haven't a clue what it is either?

:help:

The wind howl in the rear at high speeds comes from a poorly fitting quarterlight. Seemingly this is a problem in may of the current 03 Avensis'. I had to have mine refitted. The Garage used some additional 'packing' behind the rubber holding in the glass and it improved immensely but it's not gone altogether.

No, jamsholden, my Avensis has no sunroof. Tried something this afternoon though and I didn't hear the noise - turned up the music.

 Ha Ha, thats what the garage advised me to do. Hardly adequate in a 2 month old car.

Interesting. I'm getting it serviced in a couple of weeks, so I'll ask them to sort it out. Thanks

  • 1 year later...

I had the same problem with cracking noise from the windscreen area

on my avensis 01'. It was mostly in cold and dry weather, and sometimes

even from the rear window.

I finally found out what was making the noise. The rubber trims surrounding

the front and rear windows are too stiff, therefore when the car moves

(cornering or over bumps) the trims squeeks ever so gently against the windows, making the noise, wich is amplified by the window surface.

I solved the problem by masking the window with masking tape aginst the

edge of the trim, then gently removing the trim, applying a thin layer of

transparent silicone on the glass surface beneath it, and then refitting the trim.

Remember to clean the surface prior to applying the silicone.

When done, remove any eccessive silicone, and remove the masking tape.

Hope it works. It did for me. :D

blackaven, this sounds like a problem I had with my 01 Avensis. Turned out to be a cable tie on the wiring loom behind the dash. It was not cut back and liked to resonate against the metal at 50 - 60mph and over. Cut it back and hey noise gone.

My 03 Avensis had the dreaded buzz from the dash. The dealer had 2 goes at it, replaced bits of foam padding and it worked for a while then back it would come. My solution was draught excluder rubber wedged between the front of the dash and the windscreen.

Swapped the car this year and so far the new one is very quiet in all respects other than road noise on some surfaces. Certainly no buzzes and rattles.
