Changing The Serpentine Belt...

Hi all, need some advice on how best to change the serpentine belt on an E11 Corolla (4ZZ-FE). Just slacking the altenator off a bit wasn't enough to release it, any method or advice to release and change the belt would be appreciated. If anyone has a diagram for this particular model it would also be very helpful. Thanks!

Alternator is fixed so slackening won't help.

It uses an automatic tensioner system. Identify this part on the serpentine belt end of the engine. On the other side of the part to the photo you'll see a large hex (19mm from memory) formed into the side of the lever arm. Put a spanner on it and pull firmly to give you the slack to get the belt on and off (also worth while sketching/photographing the belt path to remind you when trying to refit)

Thanks Black Knight. You mentioned a photo in your post, was there meant to be any link or attachment?

Look at the Picture Morgie. This is where you place the wrench and rotate clockwise... This will rotate the tensioner assembly enough to slip the belt off.

use breaker bar, 19mm socket(i found deep socket worked better for me) & apply pressure clockwise slowly & constantly until belt is visibly loose & tensioner is pressed to its max. position. better with 2 people as i found it difficult to grip the breaker bar with 1 hand & lean over to slip the belt off without loosing grip. Also Important to draw the route of the serp. belt on a piece of paper with pullies lest one forgets which way the belt goes on the pulley.

They are about 10 quid online.
