Yaris 998Cc 1999

Hi there. Just wanted some advice! Have a 1999 0.9 yaris, circa 160,000miles. Only in last 12 months have things started wearing out which is great, but it now seems never ending! All suspension replaced in last 3 months, new anti-roll bar drop links, new alternator (boy was that expensive!) plus front and rear lambda sensors.

Problem is, car still not right. Have loss of power and shuddering, thinking it may be the camshaft sensor not working???? Or possibly the catalytic converter???? Advice would be appreciated, and can I do them myself????? What should I try first?? Unfortunately need to keep costs down due to reduced budget, but have to keep my wee baby on the road!

Thanks for any advice!

Sunshine

For starters i would check the Spark Plugs, Air Filter and MAF sensor. Has the fuel filter ever been replaced?

Check the plug lead caps, check all connectors, check all fuses, check coolant level and make sure there's no oil in there (Head Gasket failure).

It could be none of these though mate, but that's what i would check first.

thanks for advice, regularly check all home maintenance on it as its my lifeline living in rather a remote croft! Most general stuff has been changed on a regular basis, not sure about the fuel filter, need to check the haines manual - great place to keep a log of work done and part numbers! Engine management warning light off after the alternator changed, but now back on, am thinking probably the camshaft sensor is next stop! At least that is an easy replacement to do!!

Might be cheaper to just get another Yaris.

Do all Yaris's suffer when they get to be ten years old?

I think your question should be : Do all yarii suffer when they get to 160,000 miles?

160k is remarkable for a small engined car, it just goes to show if you look after your little Yaris high mileages can be acheived.

To the OP:

Could be the Cat if the internals have partly collasped. If you can hear it rattling when on tick-over then I would say the Cat needs replacing.

In that case, do all Yarii suffer when they get to 160k or indeed before?

I'm hoping to have my Yaris for as long as possible and do as many miles as possible! If it doesn't get written off or scrapped for any reaaon, I'm hoping to do at least 200k in it. I think Reece has the Yaris with the highest mileage on here perhaps? He posted a video about it once...

Think about it, ANY car will have parts that start to fail after 10yrs! Yeah, it's a Toyota but the parts on them don't last forever.

Thank god it's not a French car or a Ford or even a VW. Those things fail a lot more than Toyota's do.

The Video Reece posted was a Utube video of a Yaris owner in the USA i think. It wasn't his car!

Ah, well it was doing damned well!

I've got to have the coolant, brake fluid, gear box and engine oil changed as its now ten years old. The girlfriend is going on about it in disbelief and I always try to tell her that if it is used so much, it needs things doing to it!

Hopefully I won't have to fork out too much on it any time soon.
