2004 Avensis D4D T4 Knocking Noise

Hi all,

I have an 'expensive' knocking/rattle noise coming from around the belt area of the engine (left hand side as you look into the engine bay) and I was wondering whether anyone could give any advice please?

It is very intermittent when the engine is cold but after a few miles or the engine gets warm the sound gets more frequent. It sounds like an exhaust rattle but I can see no loose connections anywhere underneath the car. It is very frequent at idle but if I raise the RPM just a little, it disappears.

Many thanks

Phil

Hi, just a thought, remove the fan belts, if noise has gone check all pulley's such as A/C pump, alternator, idlers, if still there , then could be be Timing belt tensioner, or water pump bearing failure, or if the belt hasn't been changed for a while it may have become slack/stretched causing a slapping/rattle noise.

If the noise is more central to the engine /gearbox have your clutch/flywheel checked as the flywheel can become noisey,

Hope this helps
