Hi

My father in law had a Toyota Avensis and sadly he died last a couple of weeks ago afetr about 8 weeks n hospital in which car was not moved from garage.

Mother in law neds t sell so I went out to start it, put the key in and there was no response at all. No clocks (wherever they might be) no dashboard lights no nothing.

Assumed Battery flat so put on charge (charger has 2 lights - charge and maintain) but no lights at all on charger even off the car. Have tested Battery with 12 volt bulb and no response...i.e. lamp does not light.

Have tried charger and test bulb on alternative Battery and both ok. Aternative battery liven up car but unable to start as terminals back to front and no jump leads.

If the battery had gone dead flat then surely it would just charge like mad.

Has anyone heard of an unused for 8 weeks battery turning into and broken battery....

Seems like a new battery.......any other advice please

Thanks

Brian

Hi Brian,

I'm very sorry to hear about your loss.

I'm no expert but from what I know about batteries is that they need using every now and then and leaving a Battery for a long period of time will ruin it, would have thought it'll been ok for 8 weeks with a charge but if it was old to start with it has likely finished it off.

Now i'm no mechanic but what i'd do is jump start the car, if it runs without a problem then you know its just the Battery!

That Battery cannot be maintained again and should be replaced. It has fully discharged. Next time a car would be left for more than 2 weeks, remove the Battery terminals and it would be fine whenever it is connected back.
