2004 Avensis Gearbox Problems

Hi All,

I have had a knocking noise from the gearbox in my 2004 1.6 Avensis, mechanic knew what it was immediately but said it was he first time seeing it in the 2004 and above models. He has a guy that can replace the bearings without taking out the entire gearbox so I'm keeping my fingers crossed it can be repaired without costing a huge amount.

Has anyone out there had the same problem/fix?

The gearbox will have to come out in order to strip it down, it will have to be fully dismantled and old bearing driven out for the new one's to be presed back in place. As for the cost, it depends on where you take it to be done, cheapest will be around the £200-£250 mark and ranging upto around the £750 mark, but for that they normally replace it with a recon unit, so not really a cheap fix.

Just noticed you are in Ireland, the the cost of fixingit will be more than I first said as with my experience with Ireland you tend to pay more for everything, and since converting to euros everything has gone up even more.

Good luck with it anyway and keep me posted on the progress.

you can't replace any of the gear box bearings with out removing the gearbox!!!!!do not trust this man!!
