Disaster ! Crank Position Sensor Broken Off Help!

As part of the ongoing saga of my 1.8 GS not working I thought I'd remove and check the condition of the crank position sensor.

After locating it and removing some of the belts to get a good grip I managed to (eventually !Removed! hell it was tight) lift the black body up about 5mm and could see a light coloured core. As I pulled (and it was still stiff ) it looked like the light coloured core had not moved.

I then saw that it is broken away from the housing.

I am spitting sparks and now deeply depressed about all this.

Looks like the car is scrap.

Or am I being pessimistic?

The wire etc. are not detached from the light core yet as I realised that forcing it any more before taking advice was dumber than trying to get it off in the first place.

and the haynes manual just says it pulls out, my arms.......

Did you undo the retaining bolt as described in the manual?

The manual says "56. Undo the retaining bolt and withdraw the sensor from it's location".

That's what I did. Removed the bolt and pulled it straight up. It would not budge. To get better access I then removed the alternator belt.

Gave a bit more room so I tried again.

I think I made a mistake in rocking it too far and it snapped off.

The wire is still connected as I haven't forced it to the point of snapping yet.

Regardless of what happens I need another car, I'd love to get another MK1 estate (got loads of spares :) ) but if I can save this one I will.

Trouble is I'm approaching the point of scrapping ebaying the parts etc with this one.

OK I am looking for suggestions here.

At the moment I seem to have a sensor body detached from the light colour bit.

The wire is still in place.

Should I plusgas the hell out of it then try pulling on the wire.

Plusgas the hell out of it and persist with removing the outer body.

Or something else.

Assuming the wire snaps with the body still in place am I going to be able to get access to it from the sump?

With very few wits left I am at their end now ....:(

Oh boy!

Unless there is some trick I do not know of, you may be forced to remove the entire cambelt/chain cover and everything else that's preventing you from doing so. :(

Maybe you even have to take the engine out, not sure about your model.

Then hope you can press the sensor out from the inside of the cover.

Good luck.

Well I've got it out.

Unfortunately it did snap clean off.

For the 1998 7AFE the sensor can be accessed by taking the cam covers off. It in the bottom one.

I removed the cam belt so that I didn't pinch or crush it and was able to push it out using ever lengthening allen keys. It wasn't jammed in . An initial push wih mole grips got it moving.

I did notice what appeared to be dirt and salty rubbish near the sensor so wonder if that has affected it.

Good news is that I didn't need to take out the oil pump are anything, thank God for that.

So I'll order a new one and see if this is the cause of my starting woes.

I'll stop posting on this thread now and post back to the one about my car not starting as this thread is (thankfully) come to an end.

Right , I might be Welsh but I fancy a pint and a bit of wrong shape ball watching.

From the cheer earlier (I live in Engerland) I think England must have won the toss ;)

Congrats to get it out.

Btw, what shape balls do Welshmen have then?
