Smoking Brakes!

I seem to have a major problem with my rear brakes on my '94 Gen6 ST202, let me guide you through the story and hopefully someone knowledgeable will be able to point me in the right direction.

It all started the other day when my rear right brake started squealing. I got it home and took the wheel off to find the brake pads had worn down to nothing but the metal backing plate hence the squealing from the wear indicator. The pads were only about half worn a couple of months ago when I checked them for the MOT, and the left pads are still the same so it's only affecting one side.

Had some pads, so replaced both sides thinking that was problem solved - not thinking too much at the time about why the pads on the right seemed to have disintegrated.

Done a long drive today (about 200 miles) and brakes seemed to be working fine. However when i got home I noticed a hot smell coming from the wheel and smoke coming off it. The wheel was so hot that I could feel the heat from a few inches away, and when I spat on the disc to test it it boiled and hissed!

So can anyone point me in the likely direction of the problem, and how to diagnose the right one?

Also, I assume the advice is not to drive it at all until fixed?

Thanks

Tim.

your caliper is sticking on , the brake disc will be of no use now either as the heat will of warped it , it will need replacing and the caliper will need sorting or replaced . its a long time sice i owned a celica ,so im going off memory - if the rear caliper slides on pins , they could be your problem , they will need cleaning up and white grease applied , this will make the caliper retract when you take your foot off the brake pedal , other than that its the piston itself on the caliper thats sticking .

just fixed the same issue, the heat build up and smell (on mine) was due to the discs being scored, putting the new pads on (without new discs) meant that the raised grooves on the scored discs were being worn down by the new pads so as to make the disc smooth again. It lasted a couple of days with heat build up etc then it resolved itself. I also greased the contact points of the pads to the callipers and cleaned up the areas which were dirty when i put the new pads in and tried to make sure it was operating smoothly.
