Fitting A Usb Connection To My Auris?

Hi,

As a newbie to this forum I have 2007 Auris TR 2.0 Diesel which does not have any USB connector and I have been informed by local dealer that there is no 'kit' for this. Can anyone tell me if this could be done without having to change the supplied stereo as it is used by a dealer fitted phone handsfree unit to display phone info.

I do not want to run a cable to a 12v USB adapter plugged into my cigarette lighter I merely want a 5 volt power tap-off point that I can site on my facia near to the phone cradle to power my phone using a usb cable that has normal size type A plug on one end, mini usb on other - I do not require the usb to pass any audio. I have found numerous google links that show how to 'create' a lead that has a molex 4-pin one end via the 5v + gnd terminals and a usb socket at other. I am uncertain how to get a 5v feed from my Auris's wiring loom.

I hasten to add I have minimal car electrical knowledge so someone might say this is completely impossible/crazy - I don't mind at least others with more knowledge might help me?

Thank you in anticipation

AK

Beats me why either the car manufacturers or the aftermarket havent come up with a something which gives us a neat solution to providing USB power for all the technoparaphenalia we carry around these days . . . <endrant>

I wouldn't expect to find a 5 Volt supply in the loom. You will find something which is called "12" Volts but, in round terms, this could be anywhere between 10 & 15 Volts. USB devices like your phone need a more stable supply so you neeed to fit a converter to provide this.

I'd look at using an aftermarket cigarette lighter socket and a cigarette lighter USB supply behind the dash (easier said than done)and bringing a USB extension lead through to the dash. I'd strap the lot together with some cable tied to make sure they didn't vibrate apart in use It may also be possible to get a panel-mount usb socket from somewhere like Maplin which you could fit neatly into the fascia. If they do a multiple one, I'd go for that 'cos you can't have too many outlets.

Personally, I'd look for a permanently live 12 V feed. I don't know if the cigarette lighter socket in the Auris goes off with the ignition - if it doesn't, that would be my choice since it would be supplied via cable which could handle the additional current. Just Scotchlock the new socket cables to the existing ones - make sure you get the polarity right!

Not a complete solution, I'm afraid, but I hope it gets you a bit further. Good luck!

You won't find a useable 5 volt supply in your Auris.

Depending on your abilities/inclination/inginuity you can get a usb charging adapter from muppetbay for a few quid, then wire the feed into it from the accessory feed to you radio ???

eg:

All you'd need with this is a USB extention lead routed to where you want your output.

sorry if linking's not allowed...

Probably best to use accessory feed, wire it into a permanent feed and you'll have a flat Battery after leaving the car standing for a few days.
