Can someone tell me how on earth you gauge how much oil is in the engine by using the oil dipstick? Going on a journey over the weekend and wanted to check the dipstick to see how the oil was. It's absolutely useless!! The oil comes up about 4 inches above the maximum mark every time and I've followed the correct process for measuring and getting the engine hot etc.

The dipstick seems to me a major design fault in that it doesn't actually do what it's meant to!! OK there does seem to be a slightly darker oil further down the dipstick but how on earth will that work when you have fresh oil in it?

Can anyone enlighten me as to how I should be reading the dipstick.

Thanks

Ken

Not quite sure what the problem is Ken, but I`ve always checked the oil when the engine is cold before the first start on a morning, pull out the dipstick, wipe, replace, pull out again and even with clean fresh oil you should be able to see the level on the dipstick when turned against the sunlight.
