I had this problem not to long ago and no one knew for sure so i bought a haynes manual and stripped the interiour out to the bare metal then i soaked my car on the outside ofcourse:) and looked for it coming in to my horror i found it was going in to my "drivers side passenger footwell" aswell so be sure to check it, ill try to explain this next bit as best i can, at the back of the car on the drivers side where the tail gate is bolted to the body about two inches away from the bolt to the left if your behind the car you will see where the metal of the roof goes over the metal of the wing now directly below this inside the car under the roof interiour was wet now i cant be sure exactly what point on the body was letting in water but when i put some vasseline over the joint on the outside and along the last few inches of the black guttering on the roof it stopped letting in water and just for good measure i unbolted the rear light clusters and gave the rubber seal a good clean and rebolted them back on. also you are aware there is rubber gromits under the car to let the water out there a bugger to get out but all that water will run out in seconds

I hope some of this is of some good to you and dont lose faith in your avensis after owning a renault scenic a little water in the boot now and

again is a pleasure to deal with

Good Luck

Dave
