Gear Change

having only had my car for a week and having been used to a different car and clutch for 8 years maybe its just a case of getting used to the clutch

in the auris.

but when i change up from 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd gear it doesnt seem to be as smooth as going from 3rd to 4th and 4th to 5th, unless i let the clutch out slower there seems to be a little and i mean little clunk from the clutch.maybe its just me getting used to the new car or maybe its a characteristic of the auris ? it dosnt crunch just maybe sounds like a little clunk ? as i said if i let it out slower than the higher gears its ok

check the transmission oil and if the clutch is slipping when pulling off then definitly have it checked out as soon as possible.

The "clunk" might be normal... both the demonstrator and my own 1.33 Auris to some extent do that. It also sometimes feels to give a little "lurch" when selecting first on odd occasions... again something the demonstrator did.

What did take getting used to is that engaging first isn't always as easy as it should be... I find moving the lever only slightly to the left is better... it's one of those things you should never have to think about IMO. Having the stop start feature on the 1.33 means you need to be able to instantly select first and pull away... and you have to conciously "think" somehow when selecting.

Nit picking maybe... it's a much better box than on the TSport it replaced but there is room for improvement.

I have ben wondering anout this myself - when I first use the car after it has been standing for a bit (such as overnight) when I pull off in first I get a "clunk" sound, this happens just the once. It may have always been like it, but I did not notice it until a few weeks ago. I am wondering if I should get it checked out or if this is normal.

I’m from Portugal and have a 1.4 D4D 90hp from 2008, with 36000kms.

Recently I’m experiencing the same issue, and I can tell it is not normal. When I press the clutch pedal (and I press it very well) it makes a little “click” sound, and when I put 1st gear, it resists to enter. Keeping the clutch pedal pressed, returning the gearbox to “N” and back to 1st it enters easily.

If I return to “N”, release the clutch pedal, press it again (feeling the “click” again) and put 1st gear, the same noise and resistance to enter (and when it enters it gives me a sensation of shaking a little bit the whole car structure).

Unfortunately my car will go this or next week to the dealer to check some things, and this is one of them. However, on the 1.4 D4D, I can assure you, this ain’t normal.

If anyone has developments on this issue, please share with us!

Best regards,

My 2001 Yaris crunches between 1st-2nd all the time especially when cold It's done 117,000 miles on the same clutch. My old 58 1.8 SR Yaris did the same I really think it's nothing to worry about.

I've been reading some stuff over the web, and in a Portuguese forum found out that this may be really a known issue already existant on 2.0 and 2.2 engines related with a clutch spring (which are very expensive after warranty by the way).

Anyone had this problem, even if it wasn't on a 1.4 D4D?
