T180 Overheating

Hi everyone,

Just wondered if anyone has had any issues with their Auris overheating.

Happened to me the other day coming home, looks like the coolant is being vented out the expansion tank too.

Bit worried about possible head gasket problems although I wouldn't be expecting that as the car has only done 40000 miles and being the 2.2 certainly hasnt been thrashed! It rarely gets above 3000 rpm for the running that I do?

Any thoughts, comments or experiences???

could be a number of problems. I suggest that you book your car into the nearest toyota garage as soon as possible. There are so many things it could be.

I've got it booked in to get it investigated because i still have a few months of warranty cover left!

I'm not very familiar with Toyotas engines having had an MG before this, but my thoughts are either thermostat sticking or head gasket. but thats mainly from previous experience of overheating engines.

The problem now is that the car has overheated so there may a good chance the head gasket is fried even if it was not before but either way Toyota are good and will put this right ;)

Sorry to hear that buddy but I am sure it will be repaired all ok in no time, I will say to my knowledge your is the first Auris T180 / SR180 to have a blown head gasket but I do know some Rav4 / Avensis owners have had problems hopefully for me and offers yours will be a rare incident. I will also add this is one of the reasons I don't fancy fitting a tuning chip as I suspect this could make these problems arise.

So now we have Toyotas doing in head gaskets. Another nail in the coffin of Toyotas legeandary reliability be it thermostat fault or whatever.

May as well buy a Renault.

Please let us know the cause of this fault. If you get the truth that is.

I'll keep you all updated with whatever info i get back from them.

I certainly wasn't expecting head gasket problems after 40000 miles from a toyota, the reputation for reliability was the main reason i went for Toyota. What with all the recalls, (mines been in twice), poor fuel economy compared to what should be achievable and now this to happen I cant help feeling disappointed with the car.

I'm not taking the car back until i'm satisfied that they have investigated what caused the gasket to go, maybe the gasket was the fault, maybe it was something else that caused the gasket to go. Whatever i will do my utmost to get the full story.

On the plus side I have been given a Yaris T2 1.33 as a courtesy car and first impressions I think it is a cracking little car.

Getting over 46 MPG and have had it on some serious twisty bits of road and it handles brilliantly! If I didnt need a bigger car for the family I would probably consider one instead of the Auris!

I think you should see it like this.

It is due to overheating that the gasket has blown, not the other way around.

That is usually the case anyway, something was causing your car to overheat and in time causes head gasket problems.

The questioning of Toyota's general reliability beacuse of one case of head gasket blowing is somewhat premature, make that sort of statement when there are multiples of tens with the same problem not when there is one?

But unlucky anyway mate, hope it getsd sorted soon.

Just browsing through forums and noticed this topic have a look round this site and the internet this is a common problem with the 2.2 150 and 180 which has been documented from 2004 varying amouts of damage have been caused and no real explanation as to why it affects this engine mine a 2008 avensis has had the head gasket fail and wreck the engine 7000+ a two year old car with 72000 on clock mine is now in the hands of trading standards as all dealerships and toyota have been aware of the problem for some time but are not telling customers who purchase vehicles at the outset would anyone buy one if they knew? good luck with your repairs.

I have just spoke to our local dealer as they have our car and asked about this, in total they told me they have had 2 x Avensis and 1 x Rav4 but never an Auris with the blown head gaskets so I doubt it is major panic time. What I would be quite interested to know is how many of these cars have had tuning chips fitted at some point? it is very common for people to chip diesels for more power so it could make interesting facts or not.

Just picked the car up today, basically they have replaced the entire engine! The head was warped and the block was scored and damaged so rather than repair they have gone with full replacement. Thank goodness the car was still under warranty!

They are just stating the cause as a faulty gasket rather than anything else causing the overheating, but i am certainly going to be keeping a close eye on it for any further problems. I am also getting details of the repair work sent out to me at the start of next week.

Rick D4D, my car is a standard T180, the engine has not been chipped and all servicing has been carried out at the specified intervals. But it would make an interesting comparison to see how often chipping the diesel engine creates problems like this. Personally i dont see the point as the one thing the auris is not lacking is power.

When i spoke to the dealer they said that this was the first 2.2 with head gasket failure they had seen across the whole range. However i have found some evidence of other cases of head gasket failure amongst other models with this engine, but again not many. I agree its not time to start panicking. Hopefully these incidents are the freak occurences and not the norm.

To round things off on a positive note my local dealer have treated me very well indeed. As soon as I raised my concerns with them they got the car booked in as quickly as possible and supplied me with a courtesy car for the full 2 weeks they had it, Also the car was ready to be picked up on Wednesday but due to being away with work I was unable to make it until today but they kept hold of it until today with no charge to me. Toyota may be getting a bit of bad press at the moment but their customer service I have found to be excellent so a big  for that.
