Well all power steering makes a noise to some extent, but daft as it sounds, have you checked there is any fluid in it? You will get more noise when the car is standing because the pump is having to work harder to turn the wheels.

I would say the power steering is rather noisy on my Avensis though, not excessively, but not as quiet as on the Primera I had so if you do find out what it is then please report as mine might have the same trouble.

The noise I get is a dry metal rubbing against metal sound and you can feel a slight vibration at the same time as you hear the noise. My dealer says there was a modification made to one of the hoses from the pump?

(They say its only known to happen on the D4D diesel though?)

So I had the modification done and was told not to park on my new drive as it may leak for a while...it worked for the first few days and then the noise came back.

My warranty runs out in 10k which equals 2-3 months for me so I need to find out what is wrong before it costs me for a new rack or something

Any help would be greatly appreciated

It could be bearing noise from lower bush at bulkhead! Otherwise, ask them to change the pump.

I am pretty sure that there have been some faulty steering racks which will cause a noise. This should be sorted under warranty. I shall see what I can find out for you at work on Monday.

Found a couple of things that it could be. The lower column Universal Joint gets 'dry' and require re-packing with grease. This is a common problem on the previous generation Avensis. Toyota have now started using a special steering grease which copes with the conditions the steering throws at it.

The other thing it could be is a faulty seal inside the rack causing the noise. Toyota origionally used 2 types of rack and one of them had a seal which used to go 'dry' and start making a noise. All racks that are supplied now use the improved rack seal.

Hope this helps. B)

I have a similar problem with noise at very low speeds on my steering on my 14 month old 1.8 .

Is it dangerous ?

Or can I put up with it for a few months until my next service?

Any clues anyone ?

Not dangerous, just annoying!

If it was a dangerous problem, Toyota would have issued a recall. They do seem to be very much on the ball in those cases!
